A sub-forum on the public's rights and interests protection and the development of internet-related industries against the background of the digital economy was held on Dec 9, 2020 at the Beijing Internet Court.

As part of the forum on modernizing cyberspace governance system and capability, the event was co-held by the court, the editing department of a journal of the National Judges College, and the China University of Political Science and Law.

Jiang Ying, vice president of the Beijing Internet Court and the host of the sub-forum's first session, called on attendees to reach consensus on the difficulties in judicial practices and on the theoretical controversies after they held extensive discussions and provided diversified advice, so as to benefit internet platform governance and protection of the public's rights and interests against the background of the digital economy.

On the one hand the internet platforms have to fulfill their obligations as required by basic rules, and on the other hand they, as internet operators and rights and interests protectors, should be included in the internet governance system in a reasonable way in a bid to formulate a more efficient and reasonable governance mechanism, said Xue Jun, vice-president of Peking University Law School.

The second session of the sub-forum is themed on protection of the public's rights and interests as the Civil Code has been put into effect. It was hosted by Yao Huanqing, deputy director of the research center of commercial legal sciences under Renmin University of China.

Researchers in the field of internet governance should attach great importance to the increasing influence of individuals on society featuring fast internet development, said Fan Mingzhi, deputy director of the China Institute of Applied Jurisprudence affiliated with the Supreme People's Court.
